More and more couples are opting to get married in the winter. On the face of it, deciding to hold your wedding in the winter, sounds like a silly idea, but in reality there are several good reasons to do so.

For example, provided you avoid the Christmas and New Year season you can usually book your reception venue for a fraction of what you would have to pay for it in the warmer months. You are also likely to pay less for your wedding limo, flowers, photography and other services. If you time things right, you may also be able to save a lot of money by buying your invitations, wedding outfits, and guest gifts, in the Black Friday sales.

The fact that people take fewer holidays in the winter also means that more of the people you would like to attend your wedding will actually be able to do so. Plus, of course, it is always nicer to leave the wet and cold behind and go somewhere warm for your honeymoon. Somehow honeymooning in the winter feels more romantic, and extra special.

Unsurprisingly people love the idea of winter weddings, and there are some interesting trends developing. These are just a few of them:

Early Christmas treats

If you hold your wedding at the end of November, or during the first few weeks of December, you can give everyone an early taste of Christmas. It is perfectly acceptable to go mad with the glitter without anyone thinking you have gone over the top. Plus, the way candlelight dances off tinsel is lovely, it creates a warm, yet romantic ambience for your reception guests.

Most people love Christmas food, so incorporating some into your wedding feast always goes down well with guests. For example, pigs in blanket make great canapés, mince pies are a tasty treat as part of a midnight buffet, and everyone loves a festive roast.

Fairy tale themes A winter landscape provides the perfect backdrop for a fairytale style wedding. It is easy to find beautiful floaty wedding and bridesmaid’s dresses. If it snows, this style of dress looks especially nice in the photos.

A festive playlist

A sure way of getting everyone up and dancing at your wedding reception is to play some popular songs that everyone knows. If you get married just before Christmas, you can easily get away with playing seasonal favourites like Merry Christmas Everyone by Shakin Stevens, I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday by Wizzard and Merry Christmas Everybody by Slade. People love these songs, and are sure to want to get up and enjoy a dance when they hear them.

All I Want for Christmas Is You by Mariah Carey is the perfect record for a first dance. It is romantic, festive, and sets the scene for the couple’s up and coming life together.

You can also consider letting a choir sing for you as you leave the ceremony venue, or as guests arrive at the reception. Some will even perform free of charge, especially if you allow them to collect charity donations from your guests.
