A Beautiful Summer Surprise Proposal in SouthBank Park | Devin & Fran’s Story
It was a gorgeous summer day in Chicago when I had the pleasure of capturing Devin’s surprise proposal to Fran at SouthBank Park. The location, right next to the Chicago River with the iconic Willis Tower as the backdrop, made for an unforgettable setting. I arrived an hour earlier to scout the area, ensuring everything was perfect for the big moment.
Devin and Fran arrived right on time, but I could see Devin’s nerves starting to show. Even so, everything went off without a hitch. As Devin got down on one knee, I captured their emotions—the joy, excitement, and love were palpable. The proposal was intimate and heartfelt, and it was a privilege to be a part of such a special moment.
After the proposal, we wandered around the SouthBank area, taking some relaxed and candid shots of the newly engaged couple. Devin and Fran were incredibly gracious, and their connection was so natural—it was a pleasure to photograph their love in such a meaningful place.
I also had the chance to ask Devin a few questions after the proposal, giving even more insight into their story:
How did you two meet?
“We met on Hinge in May of 2022. After a couple of FaceTime calls, we finally met up with friends at Halligan, a bar in Lincoln Park.”
How did the proposal go?
“I think it went well! I wasn’t too nervous leading up to the proposal or even on the day of, but in the last few minutes before getting down on one knee, I definitely felt the nerves, and I know Fran could tell. I also didn’t expect it to be 85 degrees and sunny, so I was a bit sweaty for the post-proposal pics, but overall, it was a great day!”
Why did you choose SouthBank Park for the proposal?
“Fran used to live a couple of blocks away from SouthBank Park when we first started dating. We’d go for walks there with her dog, Kaia. It has sentimental value for both of us, and the park itself is beautiful. It’s a nice balance between nature and the city in the background, plus it wasn’t too crowded.”
Do you have any advice for others planning a surprise proposal?
“Don’t overthink it! The moment is brief, but what matters most is celebrating your engagement and love. I spent a lot of time contemplating different locations, only to realize that keeping it simple and choosing a place with meaning for both of us was the best decision.”
